Adjacent to El Malpais Monument, the Bandera Ice Cave was formed when water turned to ice after an ancient volcano eruption. The altitude and the insulation of the hard lava formed a perfect environment to eternally preserve the ice. Inside the beautiful cave, the temperature remains 31 degrees, even in the summer. Privately owned, the Ice Cave is open to tourists.

The first European to see the perpetual ice cave was Francisco Coronado, led there by Zuni guides in 1540. The Ice Cave is located in part of a collapsed lava tube. Also at this stop is Bandera Crater, a huge cone remaining from a volcanic eruption, about 5,000 years ago. It is nearly 1,000 feet deep, containing full-size trees native to this area. Bandera is one of the finest examples in this country of an erupted volcano, and is also one of the most accessible. It's approximately 35 miles away.
