El Malpais National

El Malpais contains the most significant lava flows in the continental United States. Located south of I-40 between Albuquerque and Grants, Southwestern American Indians have deep ties to El Malpais. The lands have figured in Acoma, Laguna, Zuni, and Ramah Navajo cultures for thousands of years. Their ancestral uses -- gathering herbs and medicines, paying respect, and renewing ties -- continue today. Protection of these lands ensure the continuation of traditions that are an integral element of this region's diversity. Today El Malpais provides spectacular hiking trails, especially along the 7.5 mile ancient trading trail between the Acoma Pueblo and Zuni Pueblo. In addition to trails, long lava tubes, petroglyphs, natural sandstone arches, and a variety of types of lava flows await the explorer. Many points of interest can be reached by or from area roads. Two visitor centers will provide maps and brochures. Water and proper hiking clothing is required.
